The third prize was awarded to Dr. Ankita Kumari Panel Discussion
(NATIONAL DAIRY RESEARCH INSTITUTE (NDRI),
Karnal). She presented on “Probiotic Lactobacillus
fermentum mediates its immunoregulatory function
by targeting epigenomic modulations. The probiotic
bacteria was isolated from the faeces of a 10-month-
old infant had a role in gut homeostasis through the
regulation of the immune response and could attenuate
E.coli or LPS induced inflammatory response in
intestinal epithelial cells. The proposed mechanism
was that L. fermentum regulated immune genes by
activating HDAC1 which reduces H3 acetylation in
a manner opposite to inflammatory which increases
the levels of H3 acetylation by suppressing the mRNA
expression of HDAC1.
The regulation of immune genes by probiotics
through epigenomic mechanisms further aided the
existing understanding of cellular and molecular
pathways that regulate host-commensal interactions.
