STAFF WRITERThe Departments of Journalism and Mass Communication, French, Tamil, English, Fashion Design, and Visual Communication., Faculty of Science and Humanities at SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST-KTR) successfully hosted a two-day International Conference on Media, Design, and Language for a Sustainable Future. Held on February 5 & 6, 2025, this interdisciplinary event brought together experts, academics, and industry leaders to explore the evolving relationship between language, culture, and media in shaping a sustainable future. The conference was a collaborative effort between the various Departments.Day 1: Interdisciplinary Collaboration in the Evolving Media LandscapeThe conference kicked off with an inaugural address by renowned filmmaker Mr. Seenu Ramasamy, who emphasised the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration, particularly in filmmaking. He discussed how integrating diverse perspectives and skills enhances storytelling and leads to more impactful cinematic experiences.Following this, Mr. G. Kartikeyan, political editor of Puthiya Thalaimurai, presented a session on the critical role of journalism in today%u2019s interconnected world. He examined the ethical challenges journalists face in the digital age, the growing influence of artificial intelligence in media International Conference on Media, Design, and Language for Sustainable Development Concludes at SRMISTproduction, and the pressing issue of misinformation in public discourse. Mr. Kartikeyan stressed the need for journalistic integrity and effective factchecking mechanisms.Prof. A. Vinay Kumar, Pro Vice Chancellor (SBL) of SRMIST, spoke about the economic advantages of linguistic diversity within the media industry. He explored how multilingual content creation fosters cultural understanding and opens new opportunities for content distribution, offering valuable insights for future research in communication studies.Day 2: Shaping the Future of Journalism Education and Media LiteracyThe second day of the conference featured Dr. Sundeep Muppidi, a media expert, who addressed the future of journalism education in India in the context of the National Education Policy. Dr. Muppidi called for a comprehensive overhaul of journalism curricula to equip students with the skills necessary to navigate the rapidly evolving media landscape and address challenges like misinformation, press freedom, and the ethical implications of emerging technologies. The afternoon session featured a keynote address by Mr. Elangovan of Junior Vikatan. His thoughtprovoking presentation centred on the importance of media literacy and critical thinking in today%u2019s media environment. Mr. Elangovan emphasised the need for individuals to become discerning consumers of information, capable of evaluating sources and identifying bias. He also highlighted the role of media in promoting civic engagement and fostering a more informed and participatory society. The conference concluded with a recognition ceremony, honouring the faculty and students who played key roles in organising the event. This acknowledgment reaffirmed SRMIST%u2019s commitment to academic excellence and innovation within the fields of journalism and mass communication.
